Beginners Intaglio Printmaking with Kyla Cresswell – no experience is necessary
Day 1: Drypoint – introducing the beautiful burr. In this introductory course you will learn drypoint, an intaglio printmaking process which is similar to etching, but produced by working into a plate with handheld sharp tools rather than chemicals.A beautifully direct method, it is possible to achieve a lively and sometimes fuzzy, velvety line, plus a whole range of subtle marks too. You will use a variety of specialist tools available in class. Working with soy based ink and clear plate, you will print your plates on a small etching press. This class will cover tips on creating drawings for drypoint, tool use, inking techniques and working with printmaking papers. There will be information sent out in advance if you wish to prepare images, but also options available in class.
Day 2: Intaglio with Tetra Pak. In this introductory class you will be working with soy-based etching inks on recycled tetra pak plate to produce intaglio prints. The process is similar to drypoint but with a twist—and easier on the fingers! The plates will be hand printed by you on a small etching press. This is a magical way to turn recycling into something beautiful. All the supplies you need will be provided in class – drypoint scribes, roulettes, knives and other tools as well as ink, paper, Tetra Pak, gloves and aprons. It is all about experimenting and learning, so really don’t feel like you need to come with anything other than curiosity! There are endless fun possibilities with this process.
