Free Community Draw Night: Break, Build, Reflect - a hands-on workshop

Join us with sketchbook and pencil in hand for Community Draw, on the second Tuesday of every month. No experience necessary - come along and embrace the joy of different approaches to drawing. Next event: Tuesday 9 June, 6:30pm.

9 June: Break, Build, Reflect - a hands-on workshop with Gus Navas

In this hands‑on workshop, participants will place a cup and plate inside a cloth bag, carefully break them with a hammer, and then  attempt to reconstruct the objects using super glue. It sounds destructive at first, but the real purpose is to explore perception, observation, form, and function in a tactile, mindful way. Rebuilding encourages you to slow down, study shapes, understand how pieces fit together, and see objects from a completely new perspective. No perfect outcome required, just curiosity, creativity, and a willingness to engage with the process. What to expect:

  • A simple powerful exercise originally from industrial design studies
  • Time to problem‑solve creatively in a relaxed, supportive  environment
  • All materials provided (cup, plate, bag, hammer, glue) – but  you’re welcome to bring your own ceramic items if you’d like a personal connection to the object

About your facilitator: Gus is an Industrial Designer originally from Chile, currently  based in Queenstown. Over the years, his professional path has combined design, hospitality and entrepreneurship, creating a  multidisciplinary and hands-on approach to creativity and problem solving. Before moving into the food industry, Gustavo worked in areas ranging from industrial and furniture design to technical drafting and research & development. Since arriving in New Zealand, he has continued working independently in graphic design and branding, developing visual identities, concepts and creative projects for small businesses and personal ventures. Today, alongside running food truck businesses and hospitality projects, he continues to work as an independent designer, combining practical thinking with creative exploration. The exercise presented in this workshop comes from Gustavo’s university years studying Industrial Design. By reconstructing familiar objects through fragmentation, participants explore perception, spatial understanding and the idea that “form follows function” in a direct and tactile way.

Details: Please bring a sketchbook, pencil and any other materials you'd like to use. We will have limited supplies.
