One Million Names in Braille is an ambitious initiative to transcribe one million names into Braille, fostering awareness and connection through this tactile writing system. Launched in 2017 by Julie Woods, known as "That Blind Woman," is a motivational speaker, adventurer, and advocate for accessibility based in Dunedin, New Zealand.
Here's how you can participate:
- Visit Julie and her team on Friday 24 January and Saturday 25 January 2025 and have your name typed in Braille.
- Or, leave your name inside a self-addressed and stamped envelope in the folder anytime you visit. Julie will type it while she is at Te Atamira and we will send it to you.
- Julie will be hosting a workshop for 8-12 year olds on Friday 24 January about Louis Braille (1809–1852) was a French educator and inventor of the Braille system, a revolutionary tactile writing and reading system for people who are blind or visually impaired. Braille's invention opened up access to literacy and education, transforming the lives of millions worldwide.
The project was Inspired by an artist who painted one million works to promote mental health. Adventurous by nature, the idea began when Julie added the Braille alphabet to her business cards and started writing names in Braille during her travels. Her personal encounters, such as a porter in India emotionally reacting to seeing their name in Braille, motivated her to expand this idea globally.
As of 2023, Julie and her team, including volunteers have transcribed over 27,000 names. She encourages people worldwide to contribute names and support the initiative to "connect the world with dots".
