The Arrowtown Creative Arts Society (ACAS) is set to brighten winter evenings with a new Winter Art Film Series, showcasing three remarkable films that celebrate creativity, culture, and artistic vision.
Kicking off in late August, ACAS will host award-winning director Annie Goldson for a screening of her documentary Red Mole: A Romance. This vibrant film dives into the radical 1970s theatre troupe Red Mole, exploring their origins, bold performances, and enduring legacy in Aotearoa’s counter-culture scene. Following the screening, audiences will have the chance to hear directly from Goldson in a special Q&A session.
In September, the series continues with Van Gogh: Poets & Lovers. Created in partnership with the National Gallery in London, this film takes a fresh look at Van Gogh’s genius, celebrating his work and artistry without focusing solely on his suffering.
October brings a visual spectacle with Dale Frank – Nobody’s Sweetie. Director Jenny Hicks will travel from Sydney to present her film on one of Australia’s most prolific contemporary artists, offering local audiences another rare chance to engage directly with a filmmaker through an in-depth Q&A.
For ACAS, this series is about more than just film—it’s about strengthening cultural life in the Queenstown Lakes district. “We want to offer a strong and diverse programme of visual culture to audiences who are hungry for it,” says ACAS co-chair Kelly Carmichael, who instigated and programmed the series.
ACAS has a history of successful film events, including a sold-out screening of a Frances Hodgkins documentary that proved the community’s appetite for art films. This year’s series builds on that success, bringing award-winning documentaries and internationally acclaimed directors to Arrowtown’s intimate boutique cinema.
With only 40 seats available per screening, tickets are expected to sell quickly. Audiences are encouraged to book early to avoid missing out on this rare cultural treat.
