With auditions scheduled for April 11-13, 2025, the production team is wasting no time in bringing this iconic musical to life. Once the cast is confirmed, rehearsals will kick into full gear, leading up to performance dates from August 8-16 at the Lake Wānaka Centre. The team is eager to put on an unforgettable show that will captivate audiences and establish Onstage Wānaka as a major player in the region’s performing arts scene.

A Vision for Theatre in Wānaka

The choice to stage Blood Brothers was a natural one. Alan, one of the key members of the team, had already conducted extensive research on the production, and the group was eager to start strong with a powerful and well-loved show. As one of Britain’s longest-running and most beloved musicals, Blood Brothers is an emotional and gripping story, making it the perfect launchpad for Onstage Wānaka’s journey.

Onstage Wānaka was born out of a need for a dedicated local theatre group, identified through discussions at Creatives of Wānaka meetings. Many of the committee members have previously travelled across the region to participate in theatre productions, and they saw an opportunity to nurture local talent and create a vibrant performing arts community right here in Wānaka.

The Team Making It Happen

Behind this exciting new venture is an eight-member committee, each bringing a diverse set of skills spanning performance, music, finance, marketing, stage management, and production. Their shared passion for theatre and commitment to bringing high-quality productions to Wānaka have laid a strong foundation for the future of Onstage Wānaka.

Adding to the excitement, the group has officially become a registered charity. This milestone opens up new opportunities for securing sponsorships, funding, and grants, helping to support their vision of making theatre accessible and sustainable in the region.

Bringing Blood Brothers to the Stage

Planning a production of this scale takes dedication, and the team has been working tirelessly behind the scenes. From selecting the script and securing performance rights to organising auditions and assembling a cast, every detail is being carefully considered to ensure a seamless production.

With auditions just a few weeks away, enthusiasm is growing. Aspiring actors, singers, and backstage crew are already expressing interest, and the team is excited to welcome newcomers alongside experienced performers.

“We want Blood Brothers to be a community-driven production,” the team shares. “Whether you love the spotlight or thrive behind the scenes, we want you on board!”

Looking to the Future

While all eyes are on Blood Brothers for now, Onstage Wānaka is already looking ahead. Venue bookings are in the works for 2026 and 2027, ensuring that the momentum continues beyond their debut production. The team’s long-term vision is clear: to create a thriving theatre community where performers, technicians, and creatives of all levels can come together and bring engaging productions to life.

If money were no obstacle, their dream project would be to build a performing arts centre—a space designed to accommodate a variety of productions, from intimate plays to large-scale musicals. The vision includes flexible performance spaces, rehearsal studios, and exhibition areas, creating a hub for creativity in Wānaka.

“The Lake Wānaka Centre is a great venue, but not all performances suit a traditional theatre setup,” the team explains. “A purpose-built performing arts centre would give us the flexibility to stage productions of all kinds and provide a dedicated home for the arts in our region.

Get Involved!

With excitement building, Onstage Wānaka is calling on the community to get involved. Whether you’re interested in auditioning, working backstage, or lending a hand with production, there’s a place for everyone. Experience isn’t necessary—just enthusiasm and a love for theatre.

“Wānaka is bursting with talent, and we’re passionate about bringing it to the stage for all to enjoy,” the team says. “We’d love to hear from you!”
